Can You Benefit From the ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet is a diet that has been described as low carb and high fat but high in protein. It has been found to be beneficial for the treatment of epilepsy. It has been discovered that the ketogenic diet increases the production of special acids called ketones by the liver that are responsible for the ketogenic state of the body.

They are produced by the body in case of starvation. This state is used by the body to produce a high level of antibodies. It is not an ideal way of producing ketones because the brain uses carbohydrates for the energy. However, for the most part the brain does not use carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet is not recommended for the treatment of epilepsy, but should be considered in the long term treatment of epilepsy. The reason for this is that the ketogenic state increases the production of special ketones by the brain. The brain makes those acids but it does not use them because it is made of proteins. This is why for some time it has been assumed that the ketogenic diet is not used for epilepsy.A new theory is now suggesting that if the diet does work it does work in a way that does not use the ketones but actually makes them instead of glucose, and that these acids can in fact be used to treat epilepsy. Some other possible use is that they can prevent stroke.

Ketogenic Diet

It should be noted that the ketogenic diet is not recommended for people who are diabetic.

The ketogenic diet is not suitable for children. It should be noted that although the diet has been described as low fat and low carb but high protein, the actual amount of protein is very minimal. The amount of fat is minimal however and there is no evidence for the claim that there are any restrictions on the amount of fat people can eat. It may be helpful to avoid eating too much dairy products.

The ketogenic diet can cause diarrhea, especially in people who suffer from diarrhea. As it prevents the body from losing fat, it is necessary to avoid eating large meals. The ketogenic diet may also cause the bowel to constipate. The diet should be avoided by people who have problems with constipation. As the diet is very low in carbohydrates it may cause an increase in ketone levels in the body. As ketones are a major source for the body’s energy production, the diet will make the ketones that are produced into acids. In a short period of time, the ketones become too concentrated and it is found to be dangerous. As acids have very high hydrogen peroxide content it is said that an increase in acidity can cause heart failure. However, there should be no change in diet as a result of the diet. This diet is not suitable for people who are on anticoagulant medication.

The ketogenic diet is best avoided by people who have had heart surgery. As the diet has very low fat it can cause irregular blood sugar levels as well as increase the chance of blood cholesterol production. As the diet is very low in carbohydrates it can also cause a significant decrease in the body’s ability to produce insulin which may cause low blood sugar levels. People who have diabetes as well as the elderly are advised against the ketogenic diet. Because the diet is so very low in carbohydrates it does increase the risk of developing dementia. It can also cause dizziness or balance issues.

This diet should only be attempted by people who are very health conscious and have made up their mind to go on the ketogenic diet for health reasons. It is not suitable for people who do not feel comfortable on the diet. This diet should not be followed for long periods of time however. A maximum of 3-4 weeks is recommended for lasting results. As the diet is quite high in protein there should be no change in diet as a result. It is a good idea to consult an experienced doctor before taking on any long term diet plan.
