The Paleo Diet

Are you just getting started with the diet or have you been following it for a while? Whatever stage of the paleo diet that you’re in, here are some tips to help out.

I’m going to be honest, the first time I heard about the paleo diet it sounded ridiculous. This is a diet that was designed for our ancestors from 10-20 thousand years ago! What could this have to do with me?

The thing is, everyone at my office eating pizza and drinking soda agreed with me. We all scratched our heads over how we would go about following such an archaic set of guidelines or even why we wanted to!

But then my friend started talking about her success on the paleo diet and how she had lost 20 pounds in 4 months without feeling hungry. That’s when I decided to give it a try myself. It turns out that giving up processed foods isn’t so hard after all!

Losing weight has never been easier, and I’m getting compliments all the time about how much smaller my waist is!

What exactly does “paleo” mean?

The paleo diet is based on our ancestral history. It means eating like our ancestors did before they cultivated land for farming . This includes anything pre-agricultural, anything that could be hunted or gathered . This means processed foods like cereal, bread, and dairy are out.

The diet has three tiers:

The first tier is the strictest , where you cut out all grains (even whole grains) and beans; no dairy; no sugar; no gum; nothing that’s “processed” for your body.

The second tier allows some natural whole grains and dairy like ghee (clarified butter). paleo diet

The third tier is the least strict , allowing all organic, whole foods; even raw sugar; raw honey; and small amounts of processed food without additives.

The paleo diet seems simple enough – but does it work?

The paleo diet has been scientifically proven to help people lose weight, specifically the second tier . The first two weeks are tough because you’re cutting out so many of your favorite foods, but once you get over that hump, you’ll find it easy to stick with the diet.

I’ve personally found my energy level increase while on this diet, and my skin has cleared up!

The paleo diet isn’t perfect. All nuts are a no-no because of the high fat content, which means you have to avoid cashews, pistachios, and peanuts . This makes it hard for me as I love snacking on trail mix. Also, be prepared to give up Starbucks.

Coffee is allowed, but only if it’s black .

Is it hard to stay on the paleo diet?

Sticking with the paleo diet requires a little self-control at first as you relearn how to shop and cook. You’ll find yourself looking for ingredients like almond flour and coconut milk instead of sugar and vegetable oil . But after awhile it starts to become second nature.

Paleo Diet Foods

If you’re not sure where to start, here are some tips:       • Stop buying pre-packaged foods – read the ingredients on your cereal and frozen dinners. You’ll be shocked at how many “food” additives there actually are!   • Buy organic whenever possible foods with hormones or pesticides will make you feel terrible            • Replace bread with lettuce wraps – romaine, iceberg, and cabbage are great for holding sandwich fillings            • Swap dairy milk for nut milk – almond, cashew, hemp seed, coconut, macadamia nut        • Swap white rice for cauliflower.

Mash it and mix it with some spices for a rice replacement

How do I get started?

I’m sure you’re wondering how on earth you can make your favorite meals paleo. That’s where Pinterest comes in!        • Search on Pinterest for “paleo + [your favorite food]”              • You’ll find paleo versions of everything from spaghetti to brownies               • Don’t be afraid to make your own, either           • Look for recipes that use ingredients you already have at home!

I made a quick paleo guacamole using avocados and tomatoes.

What if I’m not losing weight?

The paleo diet is more than just a weight loss program . It can also help treat or prevent conditions like acne, heart disease , high blood pressure, high cholesterol  and even anxiety!   If you’re not losing weight on the first tier of this diet, don’t give up ! Try moving down to the second tier for four weeks and see what happens.

The paleo diet is a lifestyle change, not just another fad weight-loss program!

Now that we’re clear on what the paleo diet is and how it works, let’s take a look at some examples where I made my favorite foods paleo!        I was really impressed with this recipe, actually. It tastes just like apple pie filling and goes great on top of my cauliflower mashed potatoes

It does get a bit messy when you’re making it, but it’s totally worth it!

This is probably the easiest recipe I’ve made that’s paleo. It takes 5 minutes of prep time and then you just let the slow cooker do the work

It was really good – I served it on top of some zoodles (zucchini noodles).

This recipe is great for when I’m craving something sweet! It took me about 10 minutes to make and it’s gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan

It smells like yellow cake and tastes like a sponge!

I’m really excited to try some of these recipes out – let me know what you think of them in the comments below! Also, if you have any other great paleo recipes that you’d be willing to share, definitely let me know so I can give them a try!
